Tausug song: Baleleng
(Tagalog version)
Baleleng is the title of a popular Tausug Song. It is sang from a male’s point of view singing about his love to a girl named “Leleng”. He described the girl (Baleleng) as beautiful like the pearl, gold an a star that shines in the sky. I think the Girl, which is Baleleng is a Rich class of girl while the guy is not. We can see in the second stanza that the guy is a type of person that is opposite to Baleleng in terms of the standing in life.
He loves Baleleng so much despite of their differences. I like the third stanza that says, “Kung ikaw Baleleng ay mawala, kung ikaw Baleleng di na makita, puso ko sa iyo’y maghihintay ‘pagkat mahal na mahal kitang tunay” here the concept of true love waits came in that if you love the person, you will wait no matter how far ang how long he/she is and this is the character of a real filipino. Isn’t it?
But as time goes by, this “true love waits ” attitude of a filipino nowadays is slowly dying. Because nobody is waiting anymore. They already have this practical mind that if they love the girl and the girl will not appreciate or response to their love, they will no longer wait for it. They will find another girl instead and have this mentality that “there are a lot of girls around, why not look for them?”. Though there are some men whi would actually wait for their true loves, but majority of them will not wait not only the males but as well as the females. “char lang!”.
