The Emperors Club

Ø Identify at least three teaching strategies used by Mr. William Hundert and cite the specific lesson where he used this.

1. Discussion- He tries to impart a passion for Greek & Roman history to his relatively motivated students, while also conveying the importance of principles and contribution to society.

2. Participation/Recitation- in part two wherein Mr. Hundert taught about oligarchy, he asked some questions in which his students where able to raise their hands and participated.

3. Formative evaluation- in the scene wherein the students where introduced that there will be a competition of Julius Caesar, Mr. William Hundert started to teach his students about the Greek persons specifically the life of Julius Caesar. He used a costume to let his students feel that they are really in the real setting of Julius Caesar world. He then begin to ask some questions as a quiz and reviewed their learning in preparation for the Julius Caesar competetion.

B. Answers to the guide questions.

1. Which of the lines above touches you the most? Why?

§ In the lines that were written in the excerpts from the movie titled.“ The Emperor’s Club”, I chose the sixth one that says,

“A great teacher has little external history to record. His life goes over into other lives. These men are pillars in the intimate structure of our schools. They are more essential than its stones or beams, and they will continue to be a kindling force and a revealing power in our lives.” Because it simply let me reminisce the past of remembering my teacher. I do not idolize her but I like the way she teaches.

2. State an experience related to the lines you have chosen.

§ I could still remember way back in my first year. She was my Art. Ed teacher. That was the time when I realized the reason why I wanted to become a teacher. Me as a learner gained wisdom from a teacher. At first I really don’t like her because I thought she’s strict but I found out that she was not that witch in my eyes. She’s simple but very energetic. She was also teaching us abput love and above all, God, which was very good, and I really learned from her. I wanted to become like her. She shares about the love of God and the students perhaps didn’t notice that she was evangelizing the word of God through having a discussion. She inserted a bit of God’s word and then backs again to the discussion. I mean she uses God’s word as an example. And that was very good. Whenever she smiles in class, we felt to at peace. Nonetheless, even if some of my classmates don’t like her because of the manner she talks and because she uses words, examples and activity from the bible which my classmates found it so weird, I still admired her. She was one of those teachers who hope for the best for us. She gave us a memorable parting gift- a Christmas card where she wrote her personal messages to us and that was so encouraging. In her own small ways, I saw she was able to change my classmates.

3. If you were Mr. Hundert, how would you address the issue of Sedgewick Bell?

§ Having the situation like Mr. Hundert has is never been too easy specially I have a little patience to a student who has the same ability and attitude of Sedgewick Bell but If I were Mr. Hundert, I would really teach Sedgewick a lesson. Because it is not good for Sedgewick to continue on his bad behavior. But I also think that it is also a case-to-case basis. Since the issue of Sedgewick is in the USA, we can’t easily take into action of disciplining a child because to them, I think it is against the law of scolding the child and even throwing chalks, papers or even applying the corporal punishment. But if we will see it in a Philippine setting, I will really implement a corporal punishment to Sedgewick for him to learn.

4. How will the learning you gain in the movie relate to your future job as teachers?

§ When I will become a future teacher someday, the learning that I have gain in the movie could help me a lot. It could be being patient, a servant of truth and teaches good values to the students, molding the students and not measuring them by an individual being but the significant change I will impart to my future students that really matters most.

5. What lesson/realization in life, related to the movie, would you like to share with your future students/kids someday?

§ I will teach them honesty, principles that they should stand to, patience, and understanding to one another.
