Student Teacher Life: Week 4
If you really didn’t care whether students learned or not, I suppose teaching could be easy. You could just follow the text book, hand out few worksheets, give a multiple choice test and do some chika with your students. And to be sure, most of us probably met one of these teachers along the way. But most teachers just aren’t like that.Conscientious teachers get to work early and leave late because they create challenging assignments, and do some stuffs for the next lesson’s activities . They read the latest news and research in their subject areas and work towards more advanced degrees. They constantly refine their teaching strategies and classroom management techniques. They also coach athletic teams, moderate clubs, run the prom, head academic departments, chair important committees,as in ALL -IN -ONE TO THE MAX!. I realized that being a teacher is not just teaching. As a teacher, it is expected that you are a person that knows everything! I mean, a person who can do anything in every situations. Multitasking kumbaga.. (I also learned this from the teacher in our refresher. I forgot her name. ) I can also say that teaching is really hard. I thought I could just teach and share my knowledge but the truth is, as a teacher, I should also readdddddd and reseeaarrcchhh mmmoooorrreee!! I also realized that in teaching, your job as a teacher is to really give the grade that the student deserves. I say this because we had a meeting with our cooperating teacher regarding on the compositions of the students that we just checked. I gave high grade to one student who only wrote two sentences in his compositions. It was my fault because I was thinking that if I will not give this student a passing grade, he will fail and maybe his parents will blame me why he failed. That was what I thought. But as Ma’am Jenny told me, I should not be afraid why I should give the student a low grade because we are following and basing on the rubric and She had a point. I also learned from students’ work- on what are the correct answers, their experiences, and most of all, I also learned that I was once there in their shoes. Once again, I should not be afraid giving a low grade so that students will realize the things that they should improve.
